How to mix prints

Print mixing

I consider myself a print-phobe. A quick glance at my closet will yield a lot of solids, especially in my favorite neutrals of grey, navy and burgundy. When I do collect prints, they are usually simple and geometric, as well as in varying shades of neutral. An occasional print is easy to throw into an outfit made up of solids, but sometimes I’m feeling a little saucy and throw not one, but two prints into an outfit. I know, crazy right? I’m just wild like that sometimes!

When I mix prints together in the same outfit, I like to wear two items that are the same print. Pinstripes with pinstripes, checks with checks, dots with dots…you get the picture. I even find they don’t necessarily have to be very similar to work nicely. Here, a very corporate looking thin pinstripe still pairs well with a more casual and sporty pinstripe. Since they are the same print, they look natural together, and the outfit has more interest without looking busy.

PS…the sweater and loafers in this post are currently on sale at Nordstrom!
