Sponsored: this post is brought to you by Happy Cards
Hi everyone! If you’re like me, then around this time in the holiday gift-buying schedule, you’re probably staring up at that huge gift card kiosk at your local grocery store, wondering if that cousin-twice-removed you only see once a year on Christmas is more of a foodie or a gamer, so you just end up pulling a generic Visa off the wall. But those things have activation fees which can add up quickly and can feel a bit impersonal.
Maybe, as I have, you’ve noticed those bright Happy Cards up on that kiosk but didn’t know their deal so you just kept on moving. Well, Happy Cards recently reached out and offered an opportunity to give their cards a try to see what they were about for myself, which I’ll be sharing with you today.
What are Happy Cards?
Happy Cards are themed gift cards (themes include “Teen”, “Guy”, “Bride”, and “Kid” just to name a few) that can be spent at a curated set of retailers. For instance, the “Happy Lady” card can be used at Sephora, Bed Bath & Beyond, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF FIFTH, Lord & Taylor, Panera Bread, Cheesecake Factory, or Spafinder. The purchaser loads the Happy Card with funds from $20 to $500, and the receiver can spend it at any of the participating brands.
Why Would I Buy A Happy Card?
Two reasons really…
- There’s no activation fee.
- It feels a little more personal than just a generic Visa gift card.
Who Would I Buy A Happy Card For?
My first thought was, “this is great for those people you need a gift for, but have no idea what they’re into these days.” For me, that mostly means teenagers or those family you only really see once a year during the holidays.
My Experience:
Purchasing was easy. I grabbed it off the kiosk at my local Vons (find your local retailer here). Load it just like any other gift card at the register, no activation fees! I picked up the “Happy Lady” card.
Spending was easy. I embarked on some self-love holiday de-stressing at three different retailers. First a coffee and bite to eat at Panera Bread. Then restocking an empty at Sephora. Finally a stop at Bed Bath & Beyond for some sheet masks and a heat wrap (holiday parties are hard on the body, man). Each location took a quick swipe and that was it. I even have a little leftover which I think I’ll spend on a glass of wine and slice of cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory.
TIP – if asked, run the Happy Card as “credit”.
Final Thoughts:
As I was going about my day, I noticed the Happy Card I chose gifted me a “day”. I was able to take it to multiple locations that spanned a meal, a necessity, and a treat, turning the gift into an excursion. I also love there’s no activation fee.
