White Blazer & The Art Of The Brooch

Gold pops so beautifully against crisp white, which unfortunately, the camera didn’t really capture here, but I’m loving how these gold pins look on this blazer. They are like a mini modern art installation I get to arrange on my lapel, and in a not quite perfect analogy, remind me of a Mark Rothko painting.

As a non-artsy person who only vaguely understands the most obvious, smack-you-in-the-face-with-their-agenda of art pieces, Mark Rothko paintings are some of the only ones that genuinely make me feel something. To me, he was able to radiate sensations off canvas through his use of space, size, color, and simple shapes. The first piece of art I ever bought when I moved in to my first apartment by myself was a Rothko print, without even knowing anything about the artist. I saw it, I felt something, and I bought it for my wall.

As for these pins, there is a purity and simplicity that really resonates with me, and I guess in that way reminds me of a Rothko. Now I want more so I’ll have yet another reason to be late in the mornings. “Sorry, my brooch arrangement wasn’t speaking to me. I had to feng shui my lapel.”

Also of note, there are a lot of great stripes on sale right now. This tee is from J.Crew (size xxs is perfectly slouchy on me, my size info for reference is here) and I’ve also been wearing this one and this one from Madewell (size xxs is a drapey, slouchy fit) non-stop this summer.
