What do you do when you have a closet full of dress shirts and feeling a little saucy? Put a bustier on it! I was led to try this top as a way to take what has become my signature look (for me, this means some iteration of denim and a dress shirt) to a little different place, while still keeping the essence of my style. It’s a statement piece that can be layered over my usual uniform for days when I need a little more pizzaz. Inspiration can be found here, here, and my personal fave.

Now that I have a good grip on my personal style, and have had some time to build a wardrobe of tailored basics that represent it, I’ve been keen on the idea of adding statement pieces that still fit my style, while adding a level of dimension to what I’ve already collected. My latest focus in this area is on bustier tops, which can be layered over shirts and under jackets/coats for a new level of interest. And I must say, as someone who is prone to slouching in front of a computer all day, a structured bustier top does wonders for your posture!

Love the deep split in the front and back! It`s super sexy, but you paired it so well to make it a bit more conservative but not any less chic.

Love the twist on the white shirt. Just curious, you seem to prefer Banana Republic and Ann Taylor for your white shirts. Friends have recommended Brooks Brothers to me. Any reason that I have not seen those featured?

      Hi Caroline,

I tried Brooks Brothers a long time ago and wasn’t impressed with the fit on myself personally, but I have friends who swear by them. The local Brooks Brothers is a bit out of my way, so I just haven’t been in there to check out their shirts recently. On the other hand, I like the fit and fabric of Banana Republic, and with a good promo, they can be picked up for a really good deal. Ann Taylor is another store that I can trust to have options that fit, and can get items for a good deal, so I tend to shop them as well.

So, no real reason why I don’t have BB shirts besides I haven’t found them to be as good a fit or deal as Banana or Ann Taylor, but that’s been my own personal experience. You should try them yourself to form your own opinion for sure. =)
