Petite Fashion Challenge #12 – From Night To Day

This month’s Petite Fashion Challenge, hosted by Khatu of I am Khatu, is:

From Night to Day: Restyle a glamorous look that you would typically wear for a night-out-on-the-town into daytime casual wear.

This was one of the more difficult challenges for me because, well, I don’t dress glamorously! I’m always at a loss for what to wear to fancy parties (not that I go to many), and when the time calls for dressing up, I usually end up in some last minute outfit that looks more business casual than glamorous.

So, I took the liberty of interpreting glamorous for my lifestyle. A night out on the town for me would be dinner, and maybe a few drinks at a low-key wine bar or lounge. I’m fidgety in dresses and skirts, so I much prefer wearing pants. A boyfriend blazer would be a better choice for some glam, but since I don’t own one, my trusty shrunken Theory will have to do. Where I added “glam” was with a sequin shell, which I just picked up from J.Crew recently (more on it later). I know what you’re thinking…sequin shells are glam? Since I’ve never owned sequins before, this little shell feels incredibly sparkly for my wardrobe, which is typically full of tweeds and collared shirts. I finished off the outfit with long, dangly necklaces, and Loubies. It’s not “oh my” glam, but I’d certainly feel sparkly sipping on a glass of red wine in a trendy neighborhood.

I know, sad excuse for glamor, and what this tells me is I seem to be heading the way of Kris Jenner with her lady tuxedos (she wears those things everywhere!). I like my daytime look much better…

Since my “glam” look was so casual to start with, it’s easy to convert for daytime. I switched out the blazer for a loose fit, menswear style cardigan, and switched into shoes in a more daytime color. This outfit easily looks like I woke up, hazy after a bit too much wine, tossed on last night’s clothes which were probably heaped in a pile on the floor, and met friends for lunch.

Detail via Instagram:

As for the sequin shell, it’s the J.Crew Drapey Sequin Tank in “Natural”, in size xx-small. With so many ladies popping up on their blogs in cute little sequin skirts, I was itching for some shine of my very own. I’m not a skirt girl, so instead, I decided to go the sequin shell route, thinking it would look cute layered under cardigans and blazers. So far, so good.

It fits loose around my waist (hence the “drapey” part of it’s name) and is a bit long (it’s folded under in the photos), but fits well at the bust and most surprisingly, is very high in the arm holes. No side bra peek-through made this a keeper for me, especially at the sale price with holiday discount codes.

**Sale Alert** I just found out today that J.Crew is having 40% off final sale items in stores. I forgot to look at the price of these sequin shells, but I’m sure it’s less than online. I also picked up a few of these cute honeycomb sweaters, which come to $23.99 after the discount in store. Here is a fitting room pic, and some color close-ups.

Where did you get the necklaces? Love them!

Is it a good thing or a bad thing that your outfit looks like clothes that you picked up off of the floor? Ha! Looks good to me.

The shell looks great! It is tempting!  Online “final sale” labels on clothing items usually scare me away, though…especially when there is no free shipping.

I also love the way you wear that watch with the pearls!

Polished as always and true to your style, Kelly!  Don’t worry a sequin tank is considered glam for me too.  On NYE, I wore a Theory skirt in the dialogue/conversation fabric and already felt glam, lol.

So cute, Kelly!  I love those pants.  Glam definitely doesn’t have to be a dress or skirt.  I need to go look for a sequin tank like yours–I have been searching in vain for one that fit well for months!

Everyone defines glam differently – The most important thing is wear what you’re comfortable with. You look great in both outfits. I really love those pants on you.

You are one of my favorite petite bloggers because like myself, you wear jeans and pants a lot! This transformation is something that I think is practical!

I love the J. Crew sequin shell!  (I just picked mine up from my seamstress, as it was unraveling in one place.)  I love how you were able to interpret this challenge to suit your style and comfort level.  You look great while staying true to your individuality.  A+.

lol, anything sequin is definitely glam in my book!  I think I’m starting to catch the sequin bug too.  I cracked up at your Kris Jenner reference, because I was just thinking that a tuxedo jacket would look super cute on you, haha!     Hmm…I wonder if adding  some skinny black velvet pants in your collections of ‘non-jeans’ could be a possibility in a super fancy glam look for you ;)

    1. Hmm…velvet pants are an interesting option…I’ve definitely been looking at those black “waxed” jeans that kinda look half shiny, half like leather. That would’ve looked great for this challenge.

Love the sequins top, I have also been itching for something sequins myself! I really adore those pants, the color is awesome. Thanks for the heads up on the JCrew sale ;)

You stayed true to yourself Kelly. I love both looks and they remind me of the sequin tops that I haven’t worn in forever. :) Thanks for the inspiration.

You and Amber make me want that tank SO badly but the cheapo in me wants free shipping (didn’t see any in my store last week) before I pull the trigger.  LOL about kris Jenner (sometimes forget she isn’t a Kardashian in name) and her lady tuxes :D

  12. Who said you don’t dress glamorously?  You look gorgeous as always. I’m a skirt girl which is opposite of you, but I love your colored jeans and want to get some soon.
As for the blazer, it’s hard for me to find one that fit my shoulders, so I own more cardigan and also choose cardigan in this challenge. Please give me some advice if you have a chance to see my outfit for this challenge:)

    1. I totally know how hard it is to find blazers! I didn’t have any for the longest time! If Theory comes out with a shrunken blazer, it can sometimes fit me, and every now and then H&M blazers can work. It’s really about finding a good fit in the shoulder, which is really hard when you’re very petite. The best advice I can give is look for shrunken fits, or online descriptions that say “shrunken”. Those have a better chance of fitting than regular blazers. Also, look for knit blazers. They fit like a sweater, but look like a blazer. It’s a nice way to get the look without stressing out over finding a real blazer. I have my eye on this one (knit & shrunken…looks like a good bet):

Kelly, the one thing I love about you is how true you stayed to yourself and always manage to look fabulous. =) The sequin shell go so well with that color jean.  I lol on your term “oh my ” glam. Aubrey and you have a way with words.

your daytime look is very harvardian! i love your burgundy pants – they’re an unexpected potential staple. i would “blaze” it up with you at night in a similar getup haha!

    1. Oh no! Sorry you missed it! I usually post the announcement in my Friday posts but with the holidays, I’ve been slow to put them together. It’s been floating around on Twitter, and was announced on Khatu’s blog. This AN Forum thread has the ongoing list:

So for the next one, be sure to keep an eye on Jen Hemming and Hawing’s blog. I’ll be better with announcing the next one on my blog…I promise! =(

Very cute! I could see myself wearing either of these. :)
Thanks for sharing your review of the top’s fit! I recently bought some sale items in an XS but will be returning them because of the saggy armholes. Now I’m thinking an XXS will work better.

    1. I hope the xxs items work out for you! If you’re buying any sequin shells, make sure it’s the “Drapey Sequin Tank” and not the “Sequin Shell”. I tried the “Sequin Shell”, and while it was very pretty, it fit really large.

Kelly, if we ever meet in person, can we hang out based on your exact description of glamorous? Because it sounds exactly like mine :) Though instead of red wine for me, I’ll have a fruity cocktail please, heavy on the fruit lol.

I adore the slouchy bottom to the sequin top. It lends the perfect casual but dressy vibe to both outfits!

  17. Cute outfits, Kelly! I love your definition of nighttime look – so much more practical than something that’s “crazy glam.” This is an outfit I would definitely wear out to a trendy bar or dinner with the girls.

You look beautiful in both of these outfits, but I’m particularly enamored of the day  look. I adore that chanel-esque cardi on you. Wish I lived within public transportation of a BR factory store, but maybe it’s good for my wallet that I don’t :)

The AG jeans look fantastic on you and I like how you applied the challenge to your everyday style!  I think I should give colored jeans a new try. I finally ventured out from my normal neutral pants (black, gray, tan) to olive….so hopefully burgundy or another color will be next! :)

  20. says: RJS

You always find greatest pants…. maybe I should branch out of abercrombie kids pants???  and I like your choice of cardigan. The more I look at it, the more I like it!

  21. I’m a new follower of yours and just wanted to say how much I love BOTH of these looks! I’m totally with you on a different version of ‘glamour’ – just depends on the evening, right? So happy to have found your blog! xoxo – Sarah
