Adventures in Altertions: How to Shrink Clothing

by AlterationsNeeded on December 30, 2009

I received an e-mail question about altering sweaters/knits from a reader (Thanks Erin!) not too long ago: Have you had any luck altering sweaters? I got a cute cardigan from J Crew that needs to be taken in. It’s Merino wool.  It’s sold out now, so I’m stuck either trying to alter it or shrink it on my own. Any help is welcome! I have never taken a sweater in to get altered, and have heard it’s actually not very easy. …

Adventures in Alterations – Tailoring a Dress

by AlterationsNeeded on February 12, 2011

Dress – Banana Republic Factory Store, size 00P – before alterations Shoes – Cole Haan Carma suede pumps, size 5 Yes, that’s right…I too succumbed to the lure of the Banana Republic tweed dress. First, Jean vlogged about it. Then other petite ladies went wild for it. I resisted at first, but when I saw the dress in person at my local Banana Republic outlet, I decided it was exactly what I was looking for. As you ca…

Adventures in Alterations: Slimming a Skirt

by AlterationsNeeded on June 14, 2010

When I first thought about altering this LOFT skirt, I tinkered with the ideas of shortening it, slimming the sides, or even getting the waist taken in so it sat higher on my waist. I wasn’t quite sure what it needed, but I liked the skirt enough to see what my tailor could do. Here is the skirt before alterations: See it altered after the jump. This LOFT button down shirt caught my eye online, and when I saw it in real life, I fell in love! The shoulder detail, being called a “corsage”, is a great detail that adds interest to the shirt. I also really like the blue pinstripes, which gives this shirt a preppy, but casual feeling. How fun!   LOFT Petite Striped Corsage Button Down Check out the great shoulder detail:     There was only one pro…

Adventures in Alterations: Taking in a Jacket

by AlterationsNeeded on August 31, 2009

Since discovering the wonderful possibilities of alterations, I’ve slowly plucked some of those items in my closet that just weren’t working for whatever reason, and have taken them to get altered. You know the ones…the items you pull out of your closet to wear, but once you put them on, there’s something not quite right with them?  Maybe you bought it on sale, and because it was so cheap, you ignored the fact it fit a …

*Update* I found the full article! Click here to read the whole thing on the Instyle website. The InStyle magazine Makeover issue on newsstands now has a cool feature on tailoring different garments. It shows before and after photos of garments needing tailoring, and explains some of the most common alterations. The best part is…my tailor, Marina Interlandi, here in Los Angeles was consulted as an expert for the feature! All images: Insty…

Adventures in Alterations: Bottom Detailed Skirt

by AlterationsNeeded on February 23, 2009

While hemming a skirt seems pretty straight forward, sometimes there are fun details that are threatened by taking off a few inches. As a follow-up to my post about the Rag & Bone pencil skirt that was a bit too long, here are the results of hemming to fit me at the knee. Before: Rag & Bone skirt, Abercrombie & Fitch sweater, Cole Haan shoes After: Rag & Bone skirt, Diane von Furstenburg top, Cole Haan shoes A basic skirt slit c…
