Adventures in Alterations: Tailoring a Button Down Shirt

This LOFT button down shirt caught my eye online, and when I saw it in real life, I fell in love! The shoulder detail, being called a “corsage”, is a great detail that adds interest to the shirt. I also really like the blue pinstripes, which gives this shirt a preppy, but casual feeling. How fun!

Check out the great shoulder detail:

There was only one problem…ok…a few problems…the shirt in size petite 00 was still quite a bit big.  The fit in the shoulder was good, but the torso and sleeves were way too baggy. Here it is in size petite 00:

Pretty big huh? To see the shirt after alterations…click “Continue Reading…”

I really wanted this shirt to work, so I took it to my tailor to see what she could do. She pinned it down the sides, and also along the two seams in the back to contour it a bit. Then she pinned the sleeves to narrow them. Here is my shirt after alterations:

Cost of Alteration: $38
The difference is pretty incredible isn’t it?The cost is a bit much to invest in a shirt, but I thought it was more than just a plain ol’ button down. The shoulder detail is a really fun and unexpected addition that made this shirt much more interesting, and worthy of investing in a little bit.

Expect an outfit post featuring this shirt in the near future!

P.S. – I’ve been rockin’ the skinny jeans lately…I realized I’ve been neglecting them by stuffing them in a drawer and forgetting all about them.  They’re really excited to be here and would like to say “hi!”

Ahh, just found your blog. I don't even bother going into Anne Taylor! I tried the xxs's on a search for a suit but it was laughably unsuccessful. Thanks for the link love girl! I'm following you now. :)

PS- I'm a size smaller than you if it boots your ego any. Haha.

What brand and style are your skinny jeans? I am still looking for my perfect pair.

That shirt looks really good on you!

For some reason, AT sizes are too big for me. But skinny jeans are my best friends.

Nukem – My skinnies are Paige Blue Heights 12" skinnies in size 23. I can't find size 23 online, but I found these in a Paige boutique. Good luck tracking down the perfect pair!

Stylepint – Thanks! Yeah, AT and ATL sizes are hit or miss. This shirt was way too big, but after alterations it worked out really well. I'm slowly getting used to the skinnies…I'm usually a bootcut girl.

Great results … my tailor would've also "forced" me to get the sleeves shortened as it's her pet peeve with button ups. I can see this looking so cute under a cardi or blazer.

Are your Paige jeans straight or skinny cut? They look like they flare out a little on the bottom but I can't really tell. Either way I'm likin the new look! It's encouraging me to break out my bootcuts … lol

PS – I still can't believe how huge that 00p is. What were they thinking?

PetiteAsianGirl – Yeah, the sleeves could be shortened a little, but I always wear my button downs with rolled sleeves, so I decided to skip it this time around. =)

My Paige's are skinnies, but they're the 14" opening skinnies, so they don't hug my ankles. I think the loose bottom is way more flattering on my figure than the ones that are skin tight.

Nukem – I mistakenly said earlier the jeans were 12" skinnies…I just found the original hang tag and they are the 14"!

The exact pair I have is here…but sold out. =(

Oh I like those skinnies! Did you have to hem them or did you find petite sizing at the Paige boutique?

Nukem – These are size 23 regular, so I had to hem them…but the waist was perfect. I'll have more pics of them tomorrow!
