Obsession: Grey Suede Shoes
I bought my Cole Haan grey suede pumps earlier this year, and they've sat mostly unworn because I was waiting until Fall to bust them out. Now that the weather has started to cool down, these babies have proved their worth as an investment, as I've somehow found a way to wear them with EVERYTHING! Suede is such a great texture to add to your outfit, and goes great with the cashmeres and silks of Fall/Winter. Grey is also a great color because it's a much more interesting neutral than black. These blend with grey work slacks, which does that whole leg lengthening effect when your pants match your shoes. When I wear jeans, I love a pop of color in my shoes, and the light grey against dark denim is a "poppy" way to do a neutral. Can you tell I'm in love with these shoes?
Cole Haan grey suede pumps, size 5
(Size 5 still available here)
Now that I'm madly in love with my grey suede shoes, I can't help but fall in love with every pair I see. I have to stop myself every time I see a pair and remind myself I already have some! Here's some awesome ones I've found:
For size 5 and above girls:
For size 4 and above girls:
This one isn't suede, but it's moc croc, which is also a great texture to have on your feet, adding interest to an outfit. Maybe I can get away with multiple grey shoes if I add these to my wardrobe...hmmm.
And for the flat lover...

Just make sure to spray your suede shoes with suede protector before you debut them to the world. It will repel dirt and water marks, and will make it easier to clean your shoes if you do get them dirty. I sprayed the hell out of my shoes when I first got them, and they still look great!

The Sartorialist: My Scott Schuman Book Signing Moment...
I should never be allowed to meet anyone I even vaguely admire, alone, ever again. I had a Ralphie moment from The Christmas Story. For anyone who doesn't know what that means...enjoy this You Tube clip:
I've been looking forward to the Scott Schuman book signing for The Sartorialist, ever since the news of his book was announced in January. I've followed his blog for a few years now, and have found lots of color and styling inspirations in his photography. Needless to say, he's my personal celebrity, and I was really excited to meet him. Of course, I entertained daydreams of all the witty things I would say, and how he would be so taken with me, he would insist on taking my photo, and immortalizing my awesome style on his blog for all to see. I made my way to Barney's in Beverly Hills, parked, and made my way up to the 5th floor. If I were smart about this, I would have taken the elevator, straight to the 5th floor, like a normal stylish person who knew what she was doing, however, in my excitement, I walked through the main lobby, to the giant spiral staircase, and made my way up 5 flights of stairs...in heels. I arrived on the 5th floor, a bit winded, sweaty, nervous, and anything but glamorous.
I arrive, and my friend is late, so I'm all alone, Scott is a few feet away from me, and I can't get my hands to shop shaking...when did I get so nervous?. I see free champagne in the corner and think, "oh good, that will calm my nerves." I grab a glass, stand in line, but before I can take even two sips, a group of people in front of me leave. Suddenly I realize I'm next in line to meet Mr. Schuman. I'm not ready!
I walk forward, put my glass down, shake his hand, all with a severe case of the shakes. Seeing this crazy person (aka, me) he now has to deal with, Scott attempts a joke to lighten the situation, which goes right over my head because all conversations from this point forward are in a weird nonsensical slow-motion. I had worked out a little something witty to write in a book for my boyfriend, but in my nerve induced fog, I couldn't stammer out what I wanted him to write. He signed my books, I asked for a picture, and handed my camera over to a lady who was handling that kind of stuff. I'm smiling, Scott is saying something I can't understand, the flash of my camera never goes off, and before I know it, I'm walking away with my books, glass of champagne, and wondering what the hell just happened.
Long story short, my picture never got taken, I acted like an idiot in front of someone who I've always wanted to meet (why, oh why can't I be as glamorous and charismatic as in my head), and my plan of having a clever inside joke scribbled in the penmanship of my favorite fashion photographer in a book for my boyfriend never materialized. Oh well...at least I got my books signed. Oh yeah, and free champagne was pretty cool too.
On a side note, Scott Schuman has awesomely blue eyes.

Brand That Runs Small: White House | Black Market
I went into White House | Black Market a long time ago and loved their aesthetic, but the sizing was too big for me at the time. Since then, they have introduced a size XXS, and now I'm hooked! To relate to you how bad my obsession has become, I've been in 2 different White House | Black Market stores in the last 3 days!
White House | Black Market is chock full of classic styles in black, white, and grey, but with interesting details and twists. This season, there is a big emphasis on Chanel inspired sweater jackets, ruffles, tweed, and all the things that get me all excited these days. I went online and picked out a few things I liked, then headed to my local stores to see what they had. Check out what I picked up...all on sale!
I don't like the way they styled this sweater jacket, because when I first saw it online, I thought the weird printed ruffle collar was part of the sweater. Ugh! When I did some more snooping around the website, I found the shirt they used underneath the sweater, and realized it was just bad styling...not part of the sweater. In real life, this sweater is cropped and fitted, has a small bit of shiny thread running through it, and has a tweedy look. It also comes with a detachable black and tweed flower pin.
I like this top because the ruffles are small and tightly concentrated, so they don't overwhelm me. Too much ruffle is a bad thing, but these are just enough to be fun, without looking too crazy. This top looks cute under a V-neck sweater, with the ruffles sticking out, and big, fun earrings.
This pin is fun because I can stick it on anything...sweaters...tops...jackets...my hair. It has an alligator clip, as well as a pin backing, so you can stick it anywhere.
And now for modeling pics!
Sweater: White House | Black Market 3/4 Marled Sweater Jacket, size XXS
Top: H&M, size XS
Jeans: Paige Premium Denim, Laural Canyon, size 24 (hemmed & waist taken in)
Shoes: Cole Haan Grey Suede Almond Toe Pumps, size 5, (another option here)
Necklace: Iridesse 80 inch Pearl Strand (similar here) (and here)
Pin: White House | Black Market Mesh Flower Pin
Top: H&M, size XS
Check out White House | Black Market for camisoles, tops, and sweater jackets in size XXS. I tried on a skirt in size 00 that ran a bit big, so unless you want to do some tailoring, skip those.

Ann Taylor Shopping Spree!
Ann Taylor put some stuff up on sale I've had my eye on for a while, so I finally broke down and made an order. I got 20% off with a coupon I received in the mail because I'm a cardholder (signing up for a store credit card really has it's perks), and got free shipping because I spent over $150 to take advantage of their current promotion. Here's what I got...
This one was only available in size Petite 0 (I'm usually Petite 00), so I'm a little nervous it will be too big. This one is also not on sale yet, but I just couldn't resist that Chanel look.
I'm really into neckline details right now, because I love having a bit of interest peak out from under a sweater. Expect a modeling post when these arrive!

One Size Does Not Fit All: Shopping for Shoe Racks
I'm fully aware that most things designed to fit into the lives of the average person is not scaled for my height. I'm not surprised when I can't reach top shelves, and I've sat at plenty of restaurant tables that nearly come up to my chest. But every now and then, I forget about how small I am, and end up a little shocked when I can't find an item purely because it was not made with someone my size in mind.
I recently decided to reorganize my shoe collection, which meant I needed a shoe rack. I needed something attractive enough to be displayed outside of my closet, so I was giving them a lot of thought. I went to The Container Store and decided I liked the look of this walnut colored expandable shoe rack.
I went to the store to inspect the shoe rack in person, and decided to buy it. Then, I realized the example shoes that were sitting on the display model were on the larger side of average, and it dawned on me that maybe I should try putting my size 5 shoe on there. Sure enough, I took off my heel and tried to put it on the rack, only to not be able to rest my shoe properly. The heel is supposed to be slung over the back bar, and the front of the shoe should rest on the front bar. When I slung my heel over the back bar, it couldn't reach the front bar. The shoe rack bars were too far apart!
The shoe should rest like this on a shoe rack, with the heel slung over the back bar, and the front of the shoe resting on the front bar.
After a little bit of sulking, followed by some creative readjustment, I figured out my shoes could sit on the rack if I rested the very back of my shoe against the back bar. Luckily, the bars are covered in a grippy spongy material that holds the back of my shoe in place, so I was able to buy the shoe rack I wanted after all.
I guess it worked out in the end, but I was still not expecting to run into this problem when I began my shoe rack shopping adventure. One size does not fit all!

Investing in the Petite Wardrobe: Chanel 2.55 Handbag
I'd describe myself as a classic kind of girl. I prefer chocolate ice cream over Cherry Garcia ...Burberry over Balmain...sensible pumps over 6 inch platforms. Classic items with sophistication and fashion staying power get me all excited. I love the idea that I could own something for the rest of my life without it going out of style. So it should come as no surprise that I love love love Chanel handbags.
And when I say Chanel handbags, I mean the classic flaps of course. The Chanel classic flap is really a remake of the 2.55 handbag that Coco Chanel herself designed in February of 1955 (hence the name 2.55). The original was a quilted leather flap bag with a rectangular latch opening, and chain shoulder straps. The modern version is also a quilted leather flap bag, but has the iconic double overlapping C ("CC") latch, and leather interwoven chain shoulder straps. Both versions (the modern "CC" lock handbag and the reissued rectangle lock handbag) are available every season in a variety of colors and materials. I love it when things have an interesting history!
To find out more about the history of the Chanel 2.55 handbag, check out these informative blog posts from The Bag Snob and The Purse Blog:
The Bag Snob: Chanel 2.55
The Purse Blog: Chanel Classic Flap Bag vs. Reissue 2.55
Did I mention on top of being a classic girl, I'm also a red girl? I've been craving a red Chanel classic flap for years! I wanted it to be the perfect shade of red, with silver hardware, and caviar leather, which is sturdier than the lambskin. I've been tracking this bag down every season, tirelessly doing Internet research on new season merchandise and relentlessly grilling sales associates, hoping my perfect bag would finally be released. So, when I saw this beauty at the Chanel boutique in the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas, I fell in love. Thanks to my wonderful boyfriend, and the celebration of our 4 years together, this bag flew all the way back to Los Angeles with me!
Sweater: Ann Taylor LOFT Cardigan, size Petite XXS
Top: H&M, size XS
Jeans: Paige Premium Denim, Laurel Canyon, size 24 (hemmed and waist taken in)
Shoes: Cole Haan Grey Suede Almond Toe Pumps (similar here)
Necklace: Iridesse 80 inch Rope Pearls (similar here) (and here)
Handbag: Chanel M/L Classic Flap (similar here) (and here) (Shopbop sells vintage Chanel now?)

Luckily for women of all shapes and heights, the Chanel classic flaps come in several sizes.
I should also mention that anyone doing research into this handbag should visit The Purse Forum, a wonderful grouping of knowledgeable handbag collectors. The women (and men) on this forum have more knowledge than any sales associate I've ever met.
Now, I have to admit, this is not my first Chanel. I also have the East/West Flap in lambskin (a great smooth leather). This bag is a little dressier than my red flap, not to mention a neutral color.
And a side-by-side comparison of the two sizes:
I know these handbags are expensive, and some may consider such a purchase as frivolous, but I consider them investments. I love everything about them, from the classic shape and design to the iconic history behind them. I love owning something that is so entrenched in the history of fashion, not to mention the history of one of my favorite fashion characters, Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. They can be dressed up or dressed down, and look great with everything. I can't stop staring at my beautiful little Chanel collection, and only hope than anyone else who loves these handbags as much as I do will get their own little piece of fashion history.

Glamour Magazine: How Can I Avoid Looking Too Tiny In Clothes?
Glamour Magazine posted a bit of advice in their Daily Style Blog in response to a petite girl asking how to avoid looking overwhelmed in her clothes. While the petite girl asking the question is on the taller end of petite (5'3"), it is still interesting to read the advice. Check out the blog post here:

Belts for Tiny Waists: Moss Mills
I've secretly been in love with the belts from Moss Mills for a while now, but haven't been brave enough to drop the money on one. However, this promotion in the November issue of Lucky Magazine might change my mind:
I love these belts because they're adjustable! Just pull the end of the leather belt until it fits your tiny waist, and you have an instant petite sized waist belt. The buckles are really fun, and would add great detail belted over a basic dress, or around a long sweater with a pair of jeans. Each buckle is available in different metals, so whether you're a gold girl or stick to silver, you get your pick of either. You can also pick your leather belt color, and if you take a look at their options, it can be a bit overwhelming. Too many to choose just one! My favorite are the double buckle belts.
Moss Mills also carries really cute jewelry in fun designs. Check out the Moss Mills site and don't forget the 30% off code!
They also have a store in Los Angeles on W. 3rd Street. I can't wait to check it out!

Great Short Boots in Small Shoe Sizes: Via Spiga "Linden" Bootie
I bought these boots months ago in size 5 from Nordstrom during an early fall sale and completely forgot about them until the weather started getting cooler. I pulled these out of my closet and wore them for the first time yesterday, and with all the compliments I got on them, they ended up being a great purchase!
I was looking for the perfect short boot to wear under boot-cut jeans and dress pants for a while. Something in black, with an almond shaped toe, so it's neither pointy nor round, but somewhere in between. I needed a thin heel (I hate clunky boot heels!) between 3-3.5 inches (my favorite height for both attractiveness and comfort), and a brand that was neither too cheap nor too expensive. I hate cheap boots because as soon as they scratch, they look awful because of the cheap leather dye jobs. However, since I'm going to beat up these boots all fall and winter (work, shopping, rain, mud...etc) I don't want to tear up a really expensive pair.
These Via Spiga "Linden" Booties are perfect! Almond toe, 3.5 inch heel, black leather, at a reasonable price point, with an expensive look to them.
And the best part about these boots is...they come in sizes 4 and 4.5! Oh, no, wait...the best part about them is...they're on sale at Nordstrom! And the small sizes are still available!
I can attest to the comfort of these, since I just wore them yesterday for the first time without a pinch or blister in sight. And I can also attest to the look of them, because all day my co-workers were complimenting my boots...even the guys!
These Via Spiga booties are available on sale at Nordstrom here:
And use the code "SHOES" to get free shipping on any shoe purchase through Oct. 26, 2009!

Death By Sidewalk: How Vegas Tried To Eat My Shoe
Las Vegas takes a lot of things...money...morals...the memories from last night after that last Mai Tai...and most recently, it tried to take my Christian Louboutin.
While walking between casinos, I was surprised to take a step and realize my shoe had been pulled off my foot. I looked back, horrified to see my shoe half eaten by a sidewalk grate. The thin heel had fallen in the tiny hole of the grate, and had to be pulled with quite a bit of force to be yanked free. After freeing my shoe, I was sad to see the patent leather on the heel had been scraped all the way down to the metal.

Damn you Vegas! Why must you ruin my precious size 35 shoe?!

Damn you Vegas! Why must you ruin my precious size 35 shoe?!
